Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about your Free Government Phone and Lifeline service.
Eligibility
Who qualifies for a Free Government Phone?
Households where someone receives SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, the Veterans Pension, or certain Tribal benefits, or with income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. See eligibility.
Can two people at the same address get Lifeline?
Only if they are separate households — meaning they don't share income and expenses. You'll complete a household worksheet during enrollment.
Do I need a permanent address?
No. You can use a temporary address, and people experiencing homelessness can still apply.
Can I qualify if I'm on SSDI?
SSDI alone doesn't qualify, but you may qualify through Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, or income. See our SSDI page.

Can I keep my number?

Keeping your benefit
Do I have to recertify?
Yes. Every year you must confirm you still qualify. We'll notify you before your deadline.
What happens if I don't use my phone?
