Consumer Protection
How to protect yourself and your Lifeline benefit from scams, fraud, and misleading offers.
Spot Lifeline scams
- Anyone asking for your full Social Security number by text or social media
- Payment demanded to "guarantee" approval
- Offers of multiple free phones for one household
- People offering to sell or buy Lifeline benefits
- Pressure to sign up on the street without a household worksheet
Protect yourself
- Apply only through a known provider or official sources
- Never share passwords or full SSNs by email
- Keep copies of what you submit
- Check that you're enrolled with only one provider
